Mary Olivia Ledbetter Dickerson was born on September 21, 1928, in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. She was the second child, out of seven, born to Burgin and Otellia King Ledbetter.
Mary departed this earthly home for her heavenly home on August 7, 2024, in Hospice Care at Hilltop Health and Rehabilitation in Rutherfordton, North Carolina.
Mary attended Elementary and High School in Rutherford County. She furthered her education at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. After graduating, she returned home and became one of the first teachers to work at Carver High School in Spindale, North Carolina. She was a Home Economics teacher and there wasn’t anything she couldn’t sew or cook.
Mary joined Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and served faithfully in various capacities.
She married Mark C. Dickerson and moved to Washington, D. C. After residing in Washington, D. C. for several years, they returned to live in Spindale, North Carolina. After both were in a serious car accident, that left Mark disabled, she became his devoted caregiver until his death in 2006.
Mary retained her fellowship with Mt. Nebo where she was president of the Women’s Missionary and a Deaconess. Mary loved singing and leading devotionals. Her favorite song was “This Little Light of Mine, I’m Going to Let It Shine,” which you could tell by the life she lived. Mary loved going to church. She always did what she could for anyone, as long as she could. She was a joy and a true angel to everyone who knew her.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Mark, her parents, Burgin and Otellia K. Ledbetter, two brothers, John B. and Paul L. Ledbetter, and two sisters, Esther L. Sanders, and Naomi L. Landrum.
She is survived by her two loving sisters, Ruth L. Freeman of Lake Lure, North Carolina, Martha L. Baskin of Brevard, North Carolina, and a host of devoted nephews, nieces, and friends.
Services will be held at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at 1:00 PM.
