Roshelbert Montgomery

Roshelbert Montgomery, known by family and friends as “Shel,” was born on April 15, 1941, in Rutherford County and departed this life peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 85. He was the son of the late James and Texanna Logan Montgomery. 


He began his career working at Stonecutters before spending 35 years at Broyhill, where he became known for his strong work ethic and dedication. Even after retirement, he was not one to sit still. He enjoyed spending his time hunting, farming, and being outdoors. He also continued to serve his community through his lawn care business, Top Dog Lawn Service, where he took great pride in keeping yards looking their best.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Randy Montgomery; sisters Leora, Louise and Patsy, brothers; Addie, Spurgeon, John Lee, Lloyd, and Sam. 


He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Joyce Montgomery; son Ricky Montgomery (LaTasha); daughter Shania Montgomery. Sisters, Mary Chiles of Asheville and Amanda Camp of Cincinnati, Ohio; his grandchildren Chris Montgomery (Leticia) of Tennessee, Josh McDowell (Deidre) of Shelby, Tatyana Montgomery, Shelton McDowell, Jaleel Lytle, Diamonica Lynch, and Jay’v’onna Lynch of Rutherfordton; nine great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.


Services will be held at Mt. Nebo Church on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 1:00 PM.
